Recognize a combination reaction by examining the number of reactants and products. In this reaction, two reactants become a single product. Combination reaction may occur between two elements, two compounds, or between a compound and an element.
The burning of carbon in the presence of oxygen to produce carbon dioxide is a combination reaction,
C + O2 → CO2
Magnesium oxide combines with carbon dioxide to form magnesium carbonate in a combination reaction,
MgO + CO2 → MgCO3

  • Decomposition Reaction
A decomposition reaction is a type of chemical reaction in which one reactant yields two or more products.
The general form for a decomposition reaction is,
AB → A + B
Decomposition reactions are also known as analysis reactions or chemical breakdowns. The opposite of this type of reaction is a synthesis, in which simpler reactants combine to form a more complex product.
You can recognize this type of reaction by looking for a single reactant with multiple products.
In certain circumstances, decomposition reactions are undesirable. However, they are intentionally caused and analyzed in mass spectrometry, gravimetric analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis.

Decomposition Reaction Examples

Water can be separated by electrolysis into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas through a decomposition reaction:
2H Another example of this type of reaction is the spontaneous decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen,
2H The decomposition of potassium chlorate into potassium chloride and oxygen is yet another example:

  • Displacement Reactions



A displacement reaction is the one wherein the atom or a set of atoms is displaced by another atom in a molecule. For instance, when Iron is added to a copper sulphate solution, it displaces the copper metal.
A + B-C → A-C + B

The above equation exists when A is more reactive than B.

A and B have to be either,
Halogens where C indicates a cation.
Different metals wherein C indicates an anion.

Double displacement reactions occur when a part of two ionic compounds are exchanged and make two new components. The pattern of a double displacement reaction is like this.

Oxidation Definition

Oxidation is the loss of electrons during a reaction by a molecule, atom or ion.
Oxidation occurs when the oxidation state of a molecule, atom or ion is increased. The opposite process is called reduction, which occurs when there is a gain of electrons or the oxidation state of an atom, molecule, or ion decreases.

An example of a reaction is that between hydrogen and fluorine gas to form hydrofluoric acid:
H2 + F2 → 2 HF
In this reaction, hydrogen is being oxidized and fluorine is being reduced. The reaction may be better understood if it is written in terms of two half-reactions.
H2 → 2 H+ + 2 e-
F2 + 2 e- → 2 F-
Note there is no oxygen anywhere in this reaction!
